MOUNTING ASSISTANT- PORT ELIZABETH
ASSISTANT JUNIOR MOUNTER TAXIDERMY

We are looking to hire an assistant mounter. You must be creative and demonstrate an ability to learn, take direction and work in a high pressured environment. This position is to enable persons to learn a new skill and apply it to taxidermy pieces based on clients' needs and preferences. The taxidermist’s responsibilities include preserving various body parts, such as horns, claws, antlers, and teeth, repairing or replacing damaged tissue areas on specimens as needed, and ordering necessary taxidermy supplies as required.

To be successful as a taxidermist, you should be detail-oriented and knowledgeable of animal anatomy as well as health and safety regulations. Ultimately, an outstanding taxidermist should be able to maintain concentration for extended periods, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and ensure that clients are satisfied with the taxidermy pieces created.

DUTIES

  • Constructing the body foundation or skeleton onto which the treated skin will be placed, using suitable materials. 
  • Creating natural or lifelike 3 dimensional mannequins and moulds. 
  • Mounting or fitting the skin onto the constructed body foundation. 
  • Removing and preserving animal skulls or constructing them using artificial materials. 
  • Constructing various artificial body parts, such as eyes, scales, and tongues and attaching them accordingly.

REQUIREMENTS

  • You will have to be creative and detail orientated with a high level of patience. 
  • You must have some knowledge of animal anatomy, and be able to recreate a natural mount, in its natural surrounds based on knowledge, skill and or media provided. 
  • Must be analytical and be able to problem solve. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in a team environment. 
  • Must have good hand eye coordination. 
  • Must have an artistic flair, with good drawing skills. 
  • A good and positive attitude towards fellow staff and company. 
  • Must have good housekeeping skills. 
  • Must be able to take direction well, and a good work ethic.
